Question

I've been doing some thinking lately (well for more than a day, fell asleep on this, for anyone who really wants to know) on what the role of a Kage actually signified within a village and how the presence of such figure lead to a village's (as a institution) growth in any shape or form. So to put it briefly my suggestion will be revolving around the importance of Kage-figures and how their regimes would effect the gameplay of the players within their village and possibly the entire game.

 

 

NOTES

Forgive my lack of knowledge on certain areas and please attempt to read everything before replying.

I'm not going to give any actual mathematical figures, that's not my call (and i'd probably cause quarrels).

 

- First and foremost, the most important tool a Kage would receive upon being elected is the ''Village Management'' option, the idea itself originally was going to involve the holding a of meeting along with "The Council of Advisers" a small group of senior players within a village selected by the elected Kage, who'd aid him/her in making certain decisions and choices - through opinions and feedback, this had for intent to add an RPing element to managing a village. The "Village Management" function would make a small window pop-up which would allow the Kage to manage Organizations, Set Ranks but most importantly the function would allow the Kage to adopt a Policy Focus.

 

- A Kage would have the choice between: "Growth Focus","Finance Focus" and "Military Focus". Each being somehow more beneficial to certain group of players within a village, making it very interesting to see a Kage's response to this variety and how efficient it would be. Not to forget that there would be a time delay in-between the option of changing from one Focus to another and keep in mind that the selection of a Policy would trigger certain events... (Enjoying yourself thus far ? Heres a bucket-load more for you to read)

 

Growth Focus

 

- The Growth policy would have for purpose to increase a village's overall Exp gain, however as stated above the Growth policy would have it's biggest impact on the lower ranked players (Acads and Genins) within the village - meaning that the lower the player's rank would be the higher his bonus exp gain and the higher is rank, the lower his bonus gain. This is done to ensure that, if this idea ever were to be implemented, the Growth policy wouldn't have this sort of instant favoritism advantage over the other two and hopefully be balanced. Some sort of level fail-safe (which would automatically decrease the bonus gain to that of a Chuunins) should also be considered In such events that people actually attempt to remain 'Forever Genin' in order to exploit this.

 

- Growth would also trigger small events which include:The apparition of a "Special" Mission-NPC, who'd provide an addition to the selection of missions ranging from D to A, with all sorts of objectives.

 

- Naturally Growth should also reward Party Exp-share. ( I had another concept involving forming strategic exp-groups, due to lower ranked players adding to the exp-share with their greater bonus but this is something which i will hopefully fully share another time)

 

Finance Focus

 

- The Finance policy will play a major role in aiding players to access the benefits that Ryos can buy, whilst making sure their wallet suffers as minimally as possible. Before I go into further details I just want to mention that I cannot stress-enough the importance durability when it comes to equipment items. After playing many Byond games it becomes inevitable not to notice the tremendously large quantities of Ryos which sit in your pocket and serve ZERO purpose whatsoever, Nin-Online should not fall into the same category and should have it's sense of realism financial-wise.

 

Suggestions within a suggestion

 

- Swords and tools break and their condition deteriorates from battle to battle, as a ninja it is your duty to ensure that your equipment is looked after and replaced to ensure your efficiency in the field. Which is why I am suggesting the introduction of a Repairing Service, the Blacksmith NPC. An NPC who has for goal to solve the durability problems of your weapons in exchange for Ryos. Other services which should be payed for are: The Spa, which unless it serves as an important feature in the future should be a cheap-to-enter Role playing  area where the health of players regenerates and the Hospital Beds fee which should only be payed by Advanced ninjas (Chuunins and higher) making it much more worthwhile to pass by a drug-store and fill up on stuff. 

 

- There should also be some sort of in-game Transport which would allow you to travel what will hopefully be far distances in the near future (when more maps are added), fvery quickly at a decent price of Ryos.

 

- Getting back on the subject at hand, the Finance Policy's benefit is the fact that it will offer the people in your village a discount in shops (EXCLUDING the Weapon Shop) and village services. Finance would also trigger a small event, where Traveling Merchants would install themselves within the village, carrying with him a selection of items typically difficult to find.

 

Military Focus

 

- The Military policy has many purposes, one of them being to grant easier accessibility to (Strong/Rare) equipment to the villagers, doing this through the apparition of a Traveling Weapons Merchant (Event) which would work in a similar fashion as the Traveling Merchants mentioned earlier. As stated previously I talked about the introduction of a Blacksmith however now I'd like to actually inform you that the Blacksmith NPC would not just repair items, he would also sell (Specific gear) but most importantly he would give players the option to Forge their own Gear through the use of resources (metals, minerals and loots) from a list of Forging recipes. The Military policy would allow for players to forge strong weapons as well as Melt (another Blacksmith feature) specific items to obtain material which can then be re-used, at a reduced cost. There should also be the possibility of the forging of the weapon to fail, in such case the NPC would reply to the player, 'Brat, the material you brought me was no good. bring me quality stuff next time' or if it succeeds, 'Tch ! Not my best work, but you won't find a weapon of this quality anywhere else in the country!'.

 

- The other purpose of this policy would be to allow a Kage to customize his village in his image through his organizations. The Organizations which I believe should be in all villages are of course the ANBU, the Medical Corps and an Espionage faction but depending on the village, the possibility of a canon organization within the series, in the case of the Leaf I would suggest and use 'Root' as an example.

 

The ANBU, Root & Medics

 

First and foremost the most important things to note about the ANBU

 

1.) ANBU selection much like all organization selections would be done by the Kage along with the individual he elected leader of the organization. The Leader would put forward the candidacy of Jounins (or chuunins, depending on the Org) who he believes meet the requirements needed and the Kage would examine that player's info-card (or something similar, but basically a record of a player's completed missions, his k/d and play-time) and would proceed by interviewing the player (RPly).

 

2.) The username of players who have equipped ANBU masks should be changed to, '-village- Anbu' in order to keep their identity a secret. Something of this nature should also be considered for other mask items.

 

The ANBU would serve 2 roles, primarily serving as the Watchdog of the village but also acting as Hunter-nins. The Watchdog's specific mission would involve maintaining the security of the village (meaning dealing with Players or NPCs which cause a problem in the village) whilst a Hunter-nin's one focuses on the elimination of Criminals with bounties. The Kage would chose 4 specific members amongst the ANBU to be part of his personal guard who'd of course be the ones in charge of safely escorting  him on his adventures outside of the village. 

 

Root being unique to the Leaf village will serve as it's center for espionage and intelligence gathering. Members of this type of factions (Spying, basically) have for mission to successfully collect important information concerning other villages and return with it to their village. This could be implemented in such a way that Spies would have to infiltrate another village's Kage House, locate the "Classified documents" and select to make a copy of them (which would be represented by a small loading bar), a process which would take several minutes of staying immobile to complete. During the process the player should not only have his pvp-mode automatically activated but should also become vulnerable meaning that his Defensive stat would decrease, the debuff would carry-on effecting the player carrying the stolen data (allowing the retrieval of the stolen information for  the opposing players, to be an easier feat) encouraging players on both sides to efficiently work in teams and co-operate (maybe even see some sacrifices along the way). If the mission is completed, a long delay will be put on the documents of the village which  the data was stolen from, data which would reveal the usernames of 2 random enemy ANBU, the Policy Focus currently adopted by that village and info which would vary per retrieved data (the approximate number of ANBU/Jounins/Meds/Spies). Knowing your enemy's defences should be key if you plan on assassinating (dropping a permadeath) on their Kage-figure. 

 

I believe that the importance of Medical Ninjas Factions could be made unquestionable by the addition of an Hospitalization system. Hospitalization should be designed to ensure that players do not instantly have the ability to walk out of the hospital after dieing, they should be bound to remain in the hospital (wearing the robes of patients of course) unable to exit for a small period of time, effected by their level, rank and k/d. The Benefits of having a Medical Ninja faction would be that for each member of the faction, that period of time would be decreased by a specific percentage for all players within the village.    

 

 

-This policy also allows a Kage to create a few more custom organizations, for (a most basic) example one dedicated to for Sensory ninjas. Allowing the Kage to shape the village in his image or even to satisfy the RPing needs of his villagers. 

 

- There should be a limited amount of spots available in Organizations, however through the Military policy a Kage would be able to steadily and permanently extend the number of available space in every Organization up to a certain amount of times. Managing the organizations and making sure that replacements are made if necessary will be the responsibility of both the Leader of that Organization (who would have the ability to kick players out) and the Kage, any form of abuse would be dealt with by the Village GM.

Q&A

 

Is this suggestion actually complete ? No, this is just something rough with several additional ideas which would help it function.

 

How long exactly will a Policy last ? Honestly, i'm still asking this question to myself whats certain is that there should be a delay on when you can change policy other than that perhaps until a Kage feels like it's time for some change - or when his village requires one.

 

When you said Level Fail-Safe, what level did you actually mean ? Let's just say the level where it's been estimated that you're guaranteed to have passed the Chuunins, for now.

 

Recap the whole Rank = Exp Bonus. Do NOT take this example as Gospel , but basically If I had to explain it simply let's say an Acad's exp boost was +20%exp, each rank that value would drop. The Fail-Safe would work in such a way that once a player hits level 20 (if that was the level estimated for a player to have been guaranteed to passed the Chuunins) then the value would also drop.

 

Can you summarize the Finance Focus part ? Sure, basically I talk about several methods in which you can spend your ryos to make your character's life much simpler and how the Finance policy will reduce the price on all of that and trigger several other bonuses. Note that this does not include the Weapon shop.

 

Durability ? -_- Really ? It's not like a sword should and would break in 2 thrusts (of course if a durability system is added these things would have to be taken into proper account) and naturally the more expensive the weapon or the higher it's rarity the higher it's durability, and therefore the cost of it's repair. But of course weapons which are considered rare or legendary such as the sword of Kusanagi should have Infinite durability.

 

And if theres an equal amount of players who want difference policies, how do you expect a Kage to deal with that ? Well first of all, the Kage doesn't have follow the orders of the villagers he's not their bitch and then it's his call, he'll chose the one which he thinks is the most beneficial at the current time.

 

Can all of this actually be programmed ? I wonder.

 

When you talk about players being able to forge their own Gear, you mean swords specifically ? Swords, knives, projectiles, gauntlets, knuckle dusters, machetes ... anything really, as long as it has a forging recipe.

 

And the Military policy is more beneficial to what group of people ? The Higher ranked players, Chuunins and above with some benefits for all, though.

 

Hold on, some villages do not have their own organizations/factions, what about them ? Then, we just improvise.

 

Like you said 'Root' is a faction from the Leaf and only for the Leaf. Does that mean that only the Leaf will have this espionage feature ? No, not at all - in terms of starting organizations in a village there should always be the Anbu (the Watchdog), the Medical Corps and an Espionage faction and if possible a specific and canon group within the series. Each offering players selected to be part of them, missions specific to their role.

 

So a village which does not have a Kage, gets no benefits ? Correct, this is why the establishment of Leadership would be so crucial.

 

What about missing-nins and people in criminal organizations ? Urgh good question, I'll think of something for plain missing-nins but something similar could be put in place for an organization such as the Akatsuki and village-less player-created factions. However i'd like to point out that being a missing-nin isn't meant to be a good thing. (This goes out to you Uchiha lovers especially)

 

'Ending Notes

This suggestion has for purpose to inspire the Staff, and allow them to rethink/add-onto what they have already planned for the Kage positions (and some other systems). Rather than making them be just another rank of higher importance.

Putting this suggestion together took WAY longer than expected and was an effort itself, so before you start composing your replies which will include every flaw this idea has, show some love ~

Lower Rank/Higher Exp: In order to avoid the exploiting of this to be OP in short amounts of time, we need to change the stat getting system for an actual training system such as hitting logs, meditating, using jutsus, throwing kunais, etc. And save the level for equipment/jutsu learning purposes.

 

Durability: Basing this on mastery should be easy, using the sword would increase your mastery with it, as the mastery levels up,  durability drops slower/nearly nothing. So if you get a sword with 500 durability, you can swing it 500 times only if you have level 0 mastery, mastery would have a certain amount of levels (Lets say 200-500), each level provides you 1 durability point free, meaning you have 1 resistance to not losing 1 durability point, so if you use the sword twice, you'll lose 1 point only. Hope it was clear.

I don't believe "elder" should ever be a rank. They are simply players whom are respected by both the village and the kage, and they are there to be "pillars" of a village. Sure, you could give a rank to one of those players, but avoid making an actual "elder" rank, since it isn't something that is to be elected.

Since admins/mods are generally looked at similarly to the "po-po", that most likely won't end up being the case. ;) 

In the end (if/when other villages are brought in), I can see a few players emerging within each village to take up these roles.

I hope people don't actually think that the whole Elders thing and the Kage selecting his elders is part of the suggestion, no - I said that was the origin behind the whole idea. O.O

Well the game is going to incorporate elements from both, so really that shouldn't be an issue but as I said some of these ideas where to help the staff re-think of add-onto what they already had planned.
