It's always nice taking time to look back at a full year of Nin Online running as an actual realized game. As of now, we've had almost 4 years of live service operation since launching Open Beta in May 2017. It feels like such a long time ago now that I actually lose count of how long it's been and have to check announcements to remember. For those who don't know the full history of Nin Online, the game project started development in mid-2013. We had multiple closed and open alpha tests, before finally launching Open Beta in 2017. This recap post is something I try to make time for every year to gather all my thoughts on the state of Nin Online and the state of Nin Online's continued development. Some random "year in numbers" stats This year, we had 10,000+ new registered accounts and 7,478 new forum posts. We localized the game service to Brazilian Portuguese. We added 263 new patch notes... Of all those patch notes, here are some of the highlights of running Nin Online for 2020... Game server recreated in C#, replaces our Visual Basic 6 server operation! Networking replaced from Winsock networking to Mirror. Unique Clan Clothings Improved Idle Animations for player and NPC characters. Village special abilities (buff WoF ) Crazy new crosshairs (rainbow spin woo) Flicker improvements (won't fail to flicker when player's front and back and blocked) First level 50+ content (Blood puppet factory area) Optimized large packets including map packet sizes by 60% Ninja Dodgeball Event 7 new side missions Added signboards in villages for directions and on-screen instructions for aviary and scroll shops New GM event system (the /eventjoin system) Moved stash from Gumi to dedicated UI button Added 43 Gold/Silver exclusive emoticons 5 Chunin Exams, 3 mini-events in the middle of the year, Anniversary Event, Halloween Event & Let it Snow event Added a friggin' gun FINALLY Fixed random DoT / Maplock bug 104 new items (not all released) 28 new mobs & npcs (not all released) 11 new jutsu animations (not all released) Nin Online Podcasts I had a lot of fun on the 4~ Nin Online podcast episodes I did this year, including the one where the new client was shown off! It was nice to talk to everyone we interviewed and hear their stories about the community and experiences in-game. I hope to do more in the future! The year of player contributions I have to say that this year has been a first in the amount of people stepping up to create art or hire people to create art, independent of any direction from myself, for Nin Online. It all began with people learning to do pixel art or getting others to help create clan outfits for their own clans, other clans and eventually entire pieces of content like weapons and Christmas cosmetics. Thank you for everyone who went out of their way to contribute to Nin Online your time and money, and I'm happy to have help! The new server software The importance of the replacement of our old server software to our new C# server... cannot be understated. It's been so nice knowing the server isn't crashing when it reaches 100+ players anymore. With the new server moving to C# also comes the added benefit of a modern development environment which has helped so much in solving bugs like just today fixing the years old bug of people getting damaged by random NPC poison/bleed effects. Without the new server, this wouldn't have been possible. The way our new server handles errors like a boss, not resulting in crashes, has also been something we previously never accounted for but has been so great. Transparency & Optimism for 2021 Honestly, I feel that the second half of 2020 was slower than I would've liked it to be in terms of content updates. Also, I took a long break for the majority of December to play Cyberpunk 2077 and watch Community. :p I have a lot of optimism that things will pick up with the start of the new year, we have work and people lined up to help me in the coming months, including my plans to steal Wolf back from his big game studio job soon. I am excited to start 2021 with some content updates dropping as early as January. On top of that, Nin Online has been performing a lot better than past years financially (thanks to more players stuck at home during the pandemic and the new brazil localization), and with that I'm able to start paying people more to work on Nin, which is going to be a great going forward. Gratitude Finally, I just want to thank the Nin Online team who have really helped me with Nin Online this year. Thank you @TheWolf for working with me throughout the year. Thank you @Kenock for leading the expansion of Nin Online's game service into Brazil, constantly pestering me to work on specific issues and telling me whenever the server crashes. Thank you @Erox for being a big help with support, moderation and running events. Thank you @Serias for actively helping me with art and also moderation. Thank you @Robin for helping with the new server project. Thank you @Seth for his continued assistance despite having a busy year attending school. Thank you @Sezu for joining us again this week and already contributing a bunch of the upcoming content. Thank you @external & @Lucass for helping us moderate discord. EDIT: On one last note, there's something I'd like to say that I forgot to write about when I posted this... In a year like 2020, where myself included, a lot of us were forced to spent a large portion of it cooped up at home, the community has been a nice place to enjoy a social environment with stakes beyond short rounds of finding out who the imposter is, or running through obstacle courses with strangers. Nin Online is a special game, but not just because of what the game is, but what the community has made it become. The Nin Online community is amazing - we have "petty drama" every day, we feel strongly defensive about what they represent, and people have friendships (and pseudo enemies) that go beyond what casual interactions in other games allow you to... because you guys spend months to years in it, interacting with one another, making stories and a history of meaningful events in our collective imaginative world. Nin Online Community is truly something like no other. I have not felt the amount of comradery and stake in a long time, and as much as I try to stay neutral to everything, watching people form their own personas or show their character makes being around the community a very enjoyable experience. In 5 years, I don't know if Nin Online will still be around, it might be. In 10 years, who knows? But the one thing you'll surely remember from your time here are the experiences with people you shared here. People will come and go, nobody can stay entertained on something forever. But during your time in the community, enjoy your share of stories and impart enough for others to remember you. That's what community is about, and on a bigger scale, what life is about. I appreciate what everyone here contributes in their own way as a person to the whole community. Enjoy your petty drama and discord pvps, because it's a privilege to feel such strong emotion about something and because who knows when the next time you'll feel so strongly about anything is, Thank you!18 points

Hey, I am Kyouko, some of you may know me by my old presence on Nin Online as Jessica, but I've decided to rejoin the community with a fresh start and hope to regain some friendships. Still unsure if I'm gunna get back into the game, at least too seriously, but would glad to here some opinions on masteries/villages/clans. It's a bit all new to me from all the awesome updates! Let me know! I'll try to get linked up to the Discord soon so I can chat with some of ya Kyouko4 points

Hello. I’ve been leveling my character and I notice that there isn’t much of an incentive to be into squads other than communication and sharing mob kills. I remember watching the show that this game draws inspiration from and squads were a huge system that allowed Genin “lowbies” to be grouped with Chuunin/Jounin and have higher mission success rates. Also kept in mind Shinobi strengths and weaknesses and allowed them to work together in balance. I feel that this would be a nice add-on to make the game more new-player friendly. I felt I went through a personal journey when leveling my character (only level 36 now) which is nice & I’m sure every village is different but in the Leaf Village it feels very empty most of the time I play... aside from the regulars. So as a lower level and even now I find myself asking for help in missions a lot. Waging War... Bounty Hunt...Spy Mission...Recover Documents these missions require going out and battling PVP which you would get lucky and find someone around your level. Most of the time it was a level 50+ roaming looking for kills or by the luck just run into you. This forces people, especially new players to abandon the mission or just get tired of the game. If I wasn’t a big Naruto fan, I probably wouldn’t continue either. I know it draws inspiration so it’s not meant to be exactly like the anime- but Genin just out of the academy need some help with missions like that. Most of the time, villagers would be too busy, relaxing or sparring. No problem with that because it is an RP game. But for those that aren’t high level and need some assistance I believe there should be some way to make higher levels want to help lower levels and get more rewarded other than just a “Thank You.” Ideas: • Squad EXP should increase your experience rather than decrease. (I understand the idea of splitting the workload therefore you should split the experience.) But again, its just a way to get people to squad up more efficiently than sharing kills. Speaking from an RP sense- even if the Jounin was in a squad with Genin, they would learn substantially more about battle tactics than if they were Genin by themselves. So maybe only limiting the increased EXP to CHUUNIN, SJ & JOUNIN that are on squads with Genin. • When selecting a mission in a squad, if you are too high of a level the mission does not activate for others. When you are in a squad, completing the mission does not share experience. I feel that if someone in the group has Waging War and someone else has Bounty Hunting you all work together to get the team’s mission done- because you all put in the effort to help each other complete missions, you should be rewarded at least in a percentage of their mission experience. • If a Chuunin or higher rank (Or even Genin) is a higher level and is in a squad with lower levels. If they select a mission, they can actually select to use their mission experience on themselves and a percentage to their squad. Or it is split among the group. So say if they are maxed level 60 with no more experience left to gain. They can still do missions to help lower levels and build another status in the village known as “Prestige”. Something that shows your helpfulness to OTHERS in the village. Things to avoid: People exploiting the system so that they can just relax in the village and get power leveled by people completing their missions. ————— I understand some of my ideas may overlap or contradict one another. Some of my ideas may not even work with the system. But it’s just to get the idea out there- I’m not doubting it hasn’t been talked about. The community is very enjoyable and I like the friendly trash talk with other villages / organization. I also enjoy the content being put out even this NEW SNAKE SUMMON. Nice! But I think it’s a nice way to keep higher levels to help the lowbies and help new players feel like they have a chance. The amount of times I’ve seen people abandon danger dango mission because of higher levels is high & that’s a very low level mission. ps. This is meant for discussion please bring fire to this topic. Thanks a lot. See you in game! Will edit if I think of anything else.2 points

This has been my second year on Nin. And even though I took breaks both years I don't regret the few thousand hours I sunk in. I'm glad to have put in work for the game through the Wiki and some minor bugs ( ). But I'm also thankful for all the fun memories (and not so fun ones) I've made and the countless friendships formed. Thank you guys. Looking forward to a new brighter year.2 points

The current swords that have a requirement of 100 strength are both rare swords with no benefit to them. As Dona's post points out, you are better off investing 10 extra points to get one of the much more powerful swords. And if you prefer a tankier build, you could just stick to the scythe, which has good damage and is incredibly fast. Having such a high strength requirement without the proper reward puts these swords at an awkward position. A strength requirement of 85 is much more fitting for these two swords, as it would feel rewarding enough to invest that amount of points. Hybrids that like stronger swords can go for these while remaining a decent amount of health and chakra and pure Weapon Masters can use these as their main weapon like they are currently doing with the Scythe and Bone Swords. This will also give the weapon masters a lot more diversity, as they are very likely to be useful while still not rendering the Scythe, Bone sword nor the Blood Katana useless. Ironically, that is exactly the situation that the Shirokata and Bandit Blade have been put in due to the release of the Bone Sword, Blood Katana and the Scythe.2 points

Lets talk about the swords of the game. It is a topic made simply to discuss about swords and give some nice suggestion. I did not create this topic to complain about scythe, because I liked that update Full str wm 100+ str build Blood katana and bone sword stands in the top for obvious reason, and I think that the balance between the two was well made (one is faster and deal less dmg, and the other is slower but deal more damage). If you can't afford those swords, bandit blade should be the best choice since it has the same damage as bone and the same attack speed as blood katana. Chakra is not really a problem for full str wm. Shirokata and the lower tier swords has too low damage to be worth going over 100 str for it. 100 str build for exactly 100 strength, I feel like shirokata was probably meant to be compared to bandit blade since they are from the same lvl (40) and have the same str req (100). And to be honest, they are both comparable swords, shirokata is faster and regen chakra but deal less damage, and bandit blade is slightly slower and deal more damage. I think that the balance between the two was well made. Unfortunately, there is no reason to go for a 100 str build as a full strength weapon master since blood katana and bone sword was introduced. And now that the lvl cap is 60 those two swords are obsolete and are only good to be in our swords collections. Making them to be 85/90 str req should fix the problem everyone sees with those swords without having to change the way they work. Not to mention that there is a huge gap of str req (75 str to 100 str) while the str req from other swords just do jumps of 10 str. less than 100 str build All the lower tier swords make sense because they gradually become better and better when you lvl up. Everything is fine until muramasa appear at lvl 30 with 80 str req while religious katana is lvl 40 with 70 str req. It makes sense that religious katana is the better sword between the 2 since it is the higher lvl sword. But the str req of muramasa being higher than reli while being a lower lvl sword is disturbing. Making the str req the same or maybe lower than religious should be a simple fix for that sword. As an example, the double sword is lower lvl than reli but has the same str req (it is the only sword that pushes the users sometimes so it is the only reason people would want to use it). People would still have no reason to use muramasa if it has the same str req as religious since it has no special trick but at least it would be less bad than now and would be a good choice for lowbies. Hybrid wm 100+ str build Blood katana is definitely the best sword for hybrid over 100 strength (110). Its huge damage make it worth sacrificing hp/chakra and intellect and it gives a bonus of +5 chakra to help the hybrid fighters. Bone sword, shirokata, and bandit blade lower damage (and no added stats) make those swords hard to synergize well with any other masteries. less than 100 str build (75/70 str build) This is in my opinion the best for hybrid weapon master. Iron scythe and religious katana are probably meant to be compared since they are around the same lvl range and str req and are the last high lvl swords in the game (lvl 40+ below the 100 str req). The unique look of the scythe makes it stands out more. But the scythe should share the same str req as religious katana since religious katana now give +3 points in chakra. When we compare the balance between religious and scythe with bandit blade and shirokata or blood katana and bone sword we notice that both swords share the same str req, the fact that it is different for reli and scythe for no obvious reason is disturbing too. Lower lvl tier swords are meant for lowbies and I believe that no lowbies have 2 masteries yet to split stats Overall weapon master is probably the masteries with the highest content in the game, and the only thing that makes other swords seems useless (like shirokata, bandit blade and muramasa) is their str req compared to other swords. Making their strength req lower now that high lvl swords are in the game will make sense and would probably give more diversity in the build of hybrid weapon master. I think it was a good summary of the situations of swords right now, and I think I gave some good suggestions that are not game breaking but if you have something better in mind feel free to comment.1 point

Ok, light is not the best mastery nor a comfortable one to use, but hear me out on this, this is not a troll post and i will not try to troll. First jutsu, lightning senbon, one of the best light jutsu, nothing too much to change to be honest, i just think that it should stun for .5 sec, also a bit more dmg second jutsu, spear, not the best light jutsu, this jutsu needs more dmg in my opinion third jutsu, lightning cutter, probably the best lightning jutsu, but i think adding more stun to it maybe .2 sec more fourth jutsu, feast of lightning, it should be a running cast homing that stuns for .5 sec fifth jutsu, current, remove the self-stun, make it instant and add more dmg, im talking good damage like 20 base dmg at least Pillars is fine as it is1 point

HELLO GUYS! So, alright, I kept in mind there's that feature making people run faster, but I had no clue it's actually so significant. The moment one of the Akatsuki members killed me yesterday made me realize of how big of an impact that makes. I completely understand I stood no chance in a fight, it was okay for me to lose, but the fact I couldn't even run was just hilarious and totally unfair. The movement speed gap was huge as a canyon. I swear, I saw him moving two tiles per second while I barely moved one in the same period of time and he wasn't a Taijutsu user. I've had contacted the same person that killed me after the fight, and the funniest thing is that he told me there's people way faster than him. If I couldn't even move away from this guy, what'd happen against those he spoke about? I had no clue if someone made a post about this yet, but I'd categorize that as one of the most persistent bugs I experienced so far. I'm not one hundred percent sure if the movement speed also is correlated with ping, it might be too, it surely is for some extent, but that's something we kinda have no control of, I guess? The refresh rate impact on the other note can be dealt with, I believe. I we all share our thoughts and experiences on this there, Ueda and overall, the staff team might notice that this really is a troublesome thing that'd be better fixed. So, if I might ask you, write about things you had witnessed. I'm sure I'm not the only one. On whichever side you are on, the faster one or the slower, share your experiences. FOR ME... My monitor has 75hz refresh rate. I have had noticed that I'm definitely faster than some people and slower compared to some individuals too. My ping oscillates in 100-120 with pingzapper on, meaning I have no trouble with it. I often do see a person that is far ahead of me, and when we both run in one direction, I'm after some time either by their side, or just ahead of them. On the other side, there's a lot of people that do the same to me. You can tell that is pretty confusing and unfair, especially in PVP that is the biggest aspect of this game.1 point

Glad my words had a moved you in some way. ASDF crew here too hahah! I have no plans on Nin going anywhere any time soon, but everything will eventually come to an end. Even if the game isn't gone yet, people come and go. I hope that even when Nin is gone, people will stay in touch. It's so much easier to do that then back in those days. I'm also pretty sure I'll keep the Nin official discord running as long as Discord is a thing. That being said, Nin is here to stay, I assure you I have no plans on slowing down development or closing it down in the foreseeable future! Didn't mean to set off any alarms about that. EDIT: I think I've been extra sentimental because I just finished watching Community, and the realization that I have no more new episodes to look forward to is making me feel things I don't want to feel.1 point

As Vipe explained, it's to do with the brief moments when people's clients hang due to large textures loading as you they across the map. When the client is frozen it can't move your character and send movement to the server. That causes the difference in movement speed. ie. Nobody is moving faster, a lot of people are moving slower. New client will fix this, no ETAs but we're working on it!1 point

Rory said it has to do with client stuttering and it will be fixed with the new client, its ridiculous so I hope it gets fixed soon1 point

I'm an old player, you could call me veteran at this point. I remember yet when Shirou was the Hokage and honestly I gotta say, the game has developed in a very good way past few years. There's plenty to do as the new content is constantly added, the PVP is more balanced that it used to be and despite some things that need to be fixed yet, Nin Online became something you definitely should be extremely proud about, Ueda. These words aren't just driven to you, there's a lot more people behind the project and you all did some awesome job. I wish I will ever manage to do something as big as you all did, not necessarily a game of course, but basically anything. I will happily stay with you all till the day my interest and wants disappear, which is not to be soon, I'm more than sure. Let's make the 2021 even more memorable!1 point

Hey everyone as the end of the year is approaching and 2021 is coming with COVID hopefully if not gone down to low numbers what do you all have planned? As you read this post also like it cuz why not Lol its positive, constructive, and good criticism. Don't be toxic do that on discord 2020 was filled with a lot of updates from Clan clothing being added, to wind changes and other balances, and finally we had got orgs added. Wonder what 2021 will bring? Snake summon, land of iron, advance masteries, new client, More balanced fps/ping from bad fps/ping players, and maybe even new balances? Who knows I sure as hell don't LMAO! My goals for 2021 with the Nin Community is as followed: Make more Jun on The Track Comedy/Cool Rap Songs ( P.S. I've got a microphone for Christmas so it's definitely time for Jun on the Track!) Hit 60 on my Bubble/Medic and Not reset but instead make alts Get unbanned from Nin Discord by @external or @Ueda Enjoy another year of Nin Without being banned from the game...hopefully LMAO SOMEONE FOUND THE BUBBLE IMPOSTER ON SAND'S CAMERAS AND REPORTED IT! Bubble has been ejected and was the imposter!1 point

1) Clans have special roleplay purposes, and have outfits I believe. Mostly just for roleplay, not necessary to the gameplay, but it's nice to have a "family" upon joining. 2) Villages are very important. There are village relations, you can fight enemies, war, different geographic locations, different skills to obtain. Leaf and Sand appear to be the most full atm. 3) I'm not sure, you may find it best to look around. I know if you go to a scroll scribe you can look at all the jutsu. 4) Summons are earned through special village missions I think. It's not a mastery. 5) Dunno, but a lot of people from around the world play!1 point

truthfully, we just need a buff to Leaf. Sure the dmg of puppets should go down, but leaf would still be underwhlemed. my friend was working on art for chakra blades which could be a good addition to the leaf. the Leaf needs a buff to compete, and its not even to nerf those of the sand or mist.1 point

Rory makes enough money from me he doesn't need p2w Lol. Also I reset so often and re-train as different masteries and I must say the journey is different each time. Try new combinations, enjoy the aspect of leveling and not the aspect of being level 50/60. I promise you the game will seem more fun. Actually spend some time fighting the bosses, do stuff with other players interact more. Nin isn't just PVP you all just made it seem that way this is why you all rush to 60 then make alts/reset or get bored soon as you hit 60 and max your jutsus.1 point

The man got me think about the day later if something worst like this will happen in the future. Well its normally to be sad or even get into depression cause u lost something that you like and it was a part of your life for many years. Alpha person always have a plan B or a way to minimize the thing that just happen. I don't wanna find myself getting into depression cause i really like this game and some ppl around even if it's to harass in game or in discord for some entertainment. I'm worry cause something like that happen to me long time ago in a game that called asdf Hover Board. Really old game the closed in 2005 and stop me to do my progress when i was actually start climbing to the top. But the day after i lost this game, The community, The conversation with my friends, The challenging.. I was seeking for a new game with my friends but at this time there's was plenty of anime mmo that hitting the gener so the switching was easier no hard feeling. But i take this situation to Nin Online, idk where i will be satistfied to spread the harass with an amazing open world pvp raids, spars, and challenging. This is a harassing world, nothing is obvious. I can't let the emotions control me as a harasser i must move forward and search for the switch to become acclimatized to. What do you guys do if one day Nin will be closed?0 points
